Norwood Participates In Walk To School Day

  • SOURCE: STANLY NEWS & PRESS

Wednesday October 10th 2007 - Norwood, NC - Children gathered at the Bank of Stanly in Norwood for food and exercise. The bank participated in Walk to School Day, an international event. More than 100 children and parents gathered to walk down Main Street on a beautiful fall day.

Danielle Smith, branch manager for Bank of Stanly in Norwood, organized breakfast for children and parents. Norwood Town Administrator Dwight Smith asked Danielle to provide breakfast for the children 4 years ago and it has become an annual event since.

Children were socializing with each other during the breakfast and eager to start the walk. "I think the idea is great," Lea Mullis said. "I get to walk with my friends to school."

"Dwight asked if the bank could participate by providing a gathering place and breakfast," Danielle Smith said. "We prepare the food and make sure we have a healthy selection for the children to choose from."

Bank of Stanly employees and family came in very early to set up a buffet line and tables for the children and parents. Helen Smith, Linda Harkey, Tammie Aldridge, Michelle Carver and Mark Jones sacrificed sleep to make sure the children had a nutritious meal. Roger Chandler, Danielle Smith and Mike Hinson cooked ham and sausage for biscuits.

Bank of Stanly CEO Bill Lawhon joined the employees, to greet children and parents. "I am proud of our Norwood associates providing the breakfast for International Walk to School Day" he said. "This is one example of how our associates are Making a Difference in our community."

The day was promoted by Norwood Elementary by making announcements. Dwight Smith was delighted with the town residents' participation. "The walk was well attended," he said. "I appreciate the Bank of Stanly along with the community for getting behind this event. This is one way to let our children know we care about them."
